House Rewiring

We take care for your vehicle

Red Elec Electrical Services provides full and partial house rewiring for homeowners, landlords and property developers across Widnes, Runcorn, St Helens, Warrington, Liverpool and the surrounding areas.

A house rewire replaces old, damaged or unsuitable wiring with a safer, modern electrical installation. This may include new wiring, sockets, switches, lighting circuits, consumer unit upgrades, earthing, bonding, testing and certification.

Rewiring is a major electrical project and should only be carried out by a qualified, competent electrician. NICEIC states that house rewiring is not suitable for DIY because working with electricity can cause property damage, injury or death.

What Is A House Rewire?

A house rewire involves replacing outdated, unsafe or unsuitable electrical wiring and accessories throughout part or all of a property.

Depending on the condition of the property, a rewire may include:

  • New electrical cables
  • New socket circuits
  • New lighting circuits
  • Additional sockets
  • New switches and fittings
  • Consumer unit replacement
  • Smoke alarm circuits
  • Cooker, shower or appliance circuits
  • Outdoor power or lighting supplies
  • Earthing and bonding upgrades
  • Electrical testing and certification

The exact work depends on the age of the property, current wiring condition, layout, access, safety requirements and any changes you want to make.

Signs Your House May Need Rewiring

You may need a rewire, or at least an electrical inspection, if you notice:

  • Frequent tripping circuits
  • Flickering lights
  • Buzzing sockets or switches
  • Warm or discoloured sockets
  • Burning smells
  • Old rubber, fabric or lead-insulated cables
  • An old fuse box with no RCD protection
  • Too few sockets for modern use
  • Extension leads being used permanently
  • Damaged or exposed wiring
  • DIY electrical work from previous owners
  • Failed EICR results
  • Electrical faults that keep returning

Electrical Safety First says older rubber, fabric or lead-insulated cabling are signs that rewiring may be necessary. It also notes that if a property is over 30 years old and still has its original wiring, it is likely to need updating at least in part.

NICEIC also lists warning signs such as circuit breakers or RCDs tripping, blown fuses, flickering lights, discoloured sockets, buzzing sounds and a consumer unit without RCD protection.

Full House Rewire

A full house rewire is usually needed when the electrical installation is old, unsafe, heavily altered, damaged or no longer suitable for modern electrical demand.

A full rewire may be recommended for:

  • Older homes with original wiring
  • Properties with unsafe or deteriorated cables
  • Homes undergoing major renovation
  • Properties with repeated electrical faults
  • Rental properties needing safety upgrades
  • Homes with old fuse boxes and limited circuits
  • Properties with poor DIY electrical work
  • Houses being extended or remodelled

A full rewire gives you the opportunity to improve the layout of your electrics, add more sockets, update lighting, prepare for modern appliances and improve safety across the property.

Partial House Rewire

Not every property needs a full rewire. In some cases, only part of the electrical installation needs updating.

A partial rewire may be suitable for:

  • Kitchen upgrades
  • Bathroom renovations
  • Extensions
  • Loft conversions
  • Damaged circuits
  • Unsafe older sections of wiring
  • Outdoor lighting or power supplies
  • Additional sockets or lighting circuits
  • Failed EICR observations affecting specific circuits

Before recommending the right approach, Red Elec can inspect the condition of the existing wiring and advise whether a full rewire, partial rewire or smaller remedial work is needed.

Rewiring For Renovations And Extensions

If you are renovating a home, adding an extension or changing the layout of a property, it is a good time to review the electrics.

Rewiring during building work can make it easier to:

  • Add sockets where you actually need them
  • Upgrade lighting layouts
  • Install modern switches and fittings
  • Add outdoor lighting or power
  • Prepare for EV charger installation
  • Improve kitchen and bathroom electrics
  • Replace unsafe or outdated wiring
  • Upgrade the consumer unit
  • Reduce disruption later

Planning the electrics early can help avoid extra chasing, patching and rework once walls, floors and finishes are complete.

Consumer Unit Upgrades During A Rewire

Many rewiring projects include a consumer unit upgrade. This allows the new or updated circuits to be protected correctly and tested as part of the installation.

A modern consumer unit can include RCD or RCBO protection, clearer circuit labelling and safer isolation. Electrical Safety First explains that RCDs can help prevent fatal electric shock and provide some protection against electrical fires.

If your current fuse box is old, damaged, poorly labelled or lacks modern protection, Red Elec can advise whether it should be replaced as part of the rewiring work.

Is House Rewiring Notifiable Work?

Some electrical work in homes is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations in England and Wales.

The Planning Portal lists notifiable jobs including the installation of a new consumer unit, installation of a complete new circuit, and certain work in special locations.

Government guidance on Approved Document P explains when electrical work must be notified and covers design, installation, inspection, testing and provision of information.

Red Elec can advise on the correct certification and notification requirements for your rewiring project.

1. Initial Assessment

We review your property, current electrical setup, known faults, renovation plans and what you want the finished installation to include.

H3: 3. Rewire Planning

We plan the socket positions, lighting points, switches, appliance circuits, cable routes and consumer unit requirements.

This stage usually involves installing cables, back boxes and circuit routes before walls and finishes are completed.

We fit sockets, switches, lights, accessories and the consumer unit where required.

6. Testing And Certification

Once complete, we test the installation and provide the relevant electrical certification.

7. Final Handover

We explain the completed work, circuit layout and any important details about your new electrical installation.

House Rewiring For Landlords

  • Rental property rewires
  • Partial rewires after failed EICRs
  • Consumer unit upgrades
  • Electrical safety certificates
  • Fault finding and remedial work
  • Electrical upgrades between tenancies

House Rewiring FAQs

How do I know if my house needs rewiring?

Your house may need rewiring if it has old rubber, fabric or lead-insulated cables, frequent tripping, flickering lights, warm sockets, burning smells, an old fuse box, poor DIY wiring or repeated electrical faults. An EICR can help confirm the condition of the installation.

Does an old fuse box mean I need a full rewire?

Not always. An old fuse box is a warning sign that the electrical installation should be checked, but it does not automatically mean the whole house needs rewiring. A qualified electrician can inspect and test the wiring before advising on the right work.

What is the difference between a full rewire and a partial rewire?

A full rewire replaces the wiring and circuits across the whole property. A partial rewire updates only specific areas or circuits, such as a kitchen, bathroom, extension, damaged circuit or section of older wiring.

Is house rewiring disruptive?

Yes, rewiring can be disruptive because cables often need to be routed through walls, floors and ceilings. It is usually easier during renovations, before decorating, or when the property is empty.

Do I need certification after a house rewire?

Yes. Rewiring work should be inspected, tested and certified by a qualified electrician. Some work may also be notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations.

Can Red Elec rewire a rental property?

Yes. Red Elec can help landlords with full rewires, partial rewires, EICR remedial work, consumer unit upgrades and electrical safety improvements for rental properties.

Should I get an EICR before rewiring?

An EICR can be useful if you are unsure about the condition of the wiring. It helps identify unsafe circuits, old wiring, lack of protection and other issues before deciding whether a full or partial rewire is needed.
